P478 Installation Guide

1. Special attention before uninstalling case

Firstly, before removing case, you must switch off power and pull out the plug.
This is a good principle which will prevent you from mistakes. Most of Slot 1 motherboard systems use ATX form factor for power. If you only switch off power without pulling out plug, some electric current of your system will be still running. Most Slot 1 systems have many new added functions for power management, such as Wake on LAN, Power on by Ring, Power on Alarm¡etc. To keep these functions working, motherboard must keep electric current. Hence, before you pull out plug, please avoid screws dropping on the motherboard to prevent from short circuit problem and from system damages.

As long as you make sure plug is pulled out before removing case cover, you don't have to worry about what has been mentioned above. Upgrading is very easy. After all, the promise of easy install is part of upgrade's appeal.

Next, please remove all of the connected peripherals and put your system on a stable table instead of uninstalling your system on the floor. Please keep good lighting when uninstalling.

You can open the case cover according to your manual. General cases have 4~6 big screws fixed on the mounting holes of the case back. After you remove screws, pull out the case cover backwards and lift it up. Then you can open the case cover.

Note: You better prepare a small box to put the screws and other components while open the case cover. You will not lose any of parts when you re-install your system.

2. P478 Voltage Setting

Please check and confirm the voltage/FSB requirement of your new CPU: You can refer to the voltage marked on your CPU and and adjust it to the appropriate setting. If your new processor require 1.475V, we suggest you to use 1.5V setting.(SLOT-T upgrade converter sets 1.5V as default).

3. IInserting a new Pentium 4 / Celeron into p478

After setting correct voltage, please go ahead for installing new Pentium 4 / Celeron on p478 upgrade adaptor.

Before inserting a new Pentium-4 / Celeron (Willamette/Northwood-core) into p478, please make sure that pin 1 of the CPU corresponds to pin 1 of p478.

After installing Pentium 4 / Celeron CPU, press the socket arm down.

4. Install processor's heatsink fan

Once again, please make sure power plug is pulled out and disconnect peripheral equipments cables and then remove case.

Take out old cooler. Next lifting up the socket arm.

Remove old processor (PGA423) from your computer system.

5. IHeatsink Retention Module Installation

We provide upgradeware's special-design mPGA478 heatsink retention module to help you install the latest heatsink fan. This retention module will still meet your needs for using more powerful heatsink fan that future Pentium 4 with higher speed require.

The most common retention modules that are used in the market are two types as photoes shown below:

One type is using 4 sets of screws to fix retention modules on the chassis. Please use screwdriver to remove screws that fix the retention modules on motherboard.

Another type is using 4 sets of white plastic plugs and black plastic collars. Please remove white plastic plugs and then black plastic collars to follow.

Please remove your original retention modules

Install upgradeware's special design retention modules on motherboard with attached screws that come with p478.

6. Install p478 into your computer's ZIF socket

Make sure that pin 1 of the p478 is properly aligned with pin 1 of the ZIF socket.

If you find installing p478 is not smooth, please re-check pin 1 alignment.

After installing p478, press the socket arm down.

7. Install processor's heatsink fan

Special Note: Please do not use old heatsink cooler because the added height of p478 will exceed the height of fan clip's thumb. Therefore, if old heatsink cooler is installed, it will possibly damage motherboard.

Align the heatsink and clip assembly with the retention and place it on the processor.

Firstly, push down on all four clip frame corners to secure to the retention mechanism hook.

Secondly, close the clip levers.

Finally, connect the fan cable to the appropriate header on the motherboard.
